How Eco 247 firewood bricks are made

At Eco 247, we believe great fires start with even greater ideas. Our kiln-dried firewood bricks are more than just a convenient heat source — they’re a bold step toward closing the loop on timber waste in Victoria.

Each brick begins its life not in a forest, but in the workshops of local craftspeople and furniture makers. We partner with incredible businesses like Jardan create beautiful, high-end furniture. And in the process, generate offcuts and sawdust that often go to waste. That’s where we step in.

Compression + kiln-drying = fire power

Kiln-drying is a controlled process of removing moisture from timber using a heated chamber, known as a kiln. Unlike air-drying (which relies on ambient conditions and can take months), kiln-drying uses regulated temperature, humidity, and airflow to dry wood quickly and consistently.

By kiln-drying, our compressed firewood bricks ensure to reach optimal burn quality and storage stability. The process typically involves:

  • Heating the chamber gradually to avoid surface checking (cracks)

  • Circulating hot, dry air to draw moisture out from the wood core

  • Monitoring internal moisture content with calibrated sensors
This method produces a consistent and high-performance fuel source, ideal for indoor heaters and stoves.

What does 8% moisture content mean?

When we say our bricks are kiln-dried to 8% moisture content, we’re referring to the percentage of the wood's total weight that is water.

Formally defined:

Moisture content (MC) = (Weight of water in the wood ÷ Oven-dry weight of the wood) × 100%

So, 8% MC means:

  • For every 100 kg of oven-dry wood, there are 8 kg of water remaining

  • The wood is very dry, significantly below the industry standard of 20% for “seasoned firewood”

This low moisture level is beneficial because:

  • Higher heat output: Less energy wasted evaporating water

  • Cleaner burn: Less smoke and creosote buildup in flues

  • Improved safety: Lower risk of chimney fires

  • Better storage: Less risk of mould or fungal growth

Most domestic firewood falls in the 15–20% range — drying to 8% puts our bricks in the premium category, suitable for high-efficiency combustion appliances.

Whether you’re heating your home, your cabin, or your shed, our kiln-dried firewood bricks offer a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable way to keep warm.
